A Sonnet For Katherina Minola

This is my first action project for my Humanities class called class called Drama. In this Class we read different plays and sonnets to learn the meaning behind them and how to interpret them. In this unit we read Shakespeare's play The Taming of The Shrew, about the Lady Katherina and it is set in Victorian Florence. Lady Kate is a strong willed woman who doesn't want to give into the standards that women are held to at the time, and she most diffidently doesn't want to get married. Throughout the story she is beaten down until she can no longer fight back and eventually becomes 'tamed'.  For this action project we had to choose a character from The Taming of The Shrew and write a sonnet giving them advice. I chose to address Lady Kate because I wanted to speak about the strength that she proved the had but still gave up. When writing this sonnet I struggled with trying to use a Shakespearean vocabulary. I was only able to do that by going back through the play a...

Building Stage Magic

This is my second action project for my STEAM class Stage Chem. This project is a follow up to the previous AP, where we chose a space we had access to and turned it into a blueprint for a theater. For this project we turned the blueprint into a scale model, that demonstrates two elements of our choice. The elements I chose were the doors that serve at the curtains and the stage lights. I enjoyed doing this project because it was challenging, but it was still fun. I struggled when measuring out the cardboard because the length of the walls all ended in fractions of inches. On of the main reasons I chose this space for my theater is because these doors are already there. They take up 1/3 of the 22 1/2 f...

Creating Stage Magic

Image
This is my first action project for my STEAM class called Stage Chem. In this class, we looked at the layout of different theaters, the amenities that they have and what makes a good theater. The theater that we look at the most was the Goodman theater in downtown Chicago. For this action project we had to choose a space that we had access to and turn it into a theater for a show of our choice, then turn that into one big blueprint and six smaller ones looking the micro details of the space. I chose to tell the latest story from the Harry Potter world, The Cursed Child, and show it at my house. I had quite a bit of trouble getting all of the measurements for the space, because there are so many rooms with quite a lot of detail. Eventually I managed to get help from other people and I even found a few accurate but time saving tricks to get all of the measurements. I did like the challenge that this project posed, because of all of the work that was entailed, even though I got less sleep...

Banning The Color Purple

Image
This is my third and final action project for my Humanities class, Forbidden Books. This unit was about diversity, and although this was a very brief unit we looked at the importance of diversity in literature, and how the lack of it can affect a society. We also read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian , which is a story that depicts racism from the perspective of a young boy living in the modern world. For this action project we watched the movie based off of the novel, The Color Purple and then look at why the novel was banned in so many places. Flower Cranesbill Bloom Blossom Flowers Blütenmeer (2016) Web: Max Pixel When Celie was just 14 years old her father gave her away to Mister in place of her sister, Nettie. Not too long after Celie was forced into a life of servitude as ‘Misters’ wife, Nettie runs away from their father and takes refuge in Celie’s new home. While she is staying with Celie and Mister Nettie finds herself at the end of unwanted and unwelcom...

The ADHD Experience

This is my second action project for my STEAM class Disease. In this unit, which is called Mind, we studied mental disorders, brain waves, and how the mind and body are interconnected. We took a trip to UIC to talk to Dr. Ronayne about his work and to walk through how doctors diagnose both mental and physical diseases and disorders. The purpose of this action project was to create a simulation to demonstrate what a daily experience of someone with a mental disorder could be like. I chose to simulate Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, because I personally have ADHD so I already had an idea of how to display it. I had enjoyed this project immensely, mostly because I was able to accurately explain the way my brain works to my classmates on a scientific and personal level. A quote that feel perfectly my experience with ADHD was spoken by Rowan Moon, the sister of a YouTuber I watch regularly: "It’s like you’re in a corridor, most people get an empty one, they can think in ...

Reviewing Private Ryan

This is my first and only action project for my humanities course called Ollywood. In Ollywood we learned about the history of film and the process of producing them. We had 3 sections to this class, called Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production. In Pre-Production we learned about how to write a screenplay, location scouting, set and costume designing and a number of other jobs. In production we learned all about directing, cinematography, lighting and the the jobs of the actors. In Post-Production we learned about editing, soundtracks, and the creation of sound effects. Since this class was only 5 weeks long and we had so many topics to cover I had a hard time keeping up with all of the information that we were given. I eventually adjusted to the fast pace of this class and really enjoyed learning about the complex process of creating and reviewing a film once this happened. For this action project we were put into groups to review a film of our choice by looking at the Pr...

Lebenia

Image
This is my first action project for my humanities class called Stories. This unit we focused on creation myths, also known as Etiological myths. The purpose of this project is to create a myth, a world, or a society using what we have learned. I chose to create a planet called Lebenia and told the story through second person so the reader can get a tour of the planet through the perspective of a citizen. I really enjoyed this project because I could put my creativity to use and make a whole new world. I had a little trouble putting all of my ideas into a story format, and in the end there was a lot of things that I had to cut out of the story. I am particularly proud of the artwork I created because I got to visualize the geography and a creature so the reader could actual see what I saw when imagining it. “Hello, My name is Della Roth and I will be you tour guide as we traverse Lebenia! MN (2016) Lebenia Before we begin our tour I would suggest you look up. You may notice the ...
