Re-Write The Code

This is my second action project for my humanities class called A Nations Argument. In this class we learned about what an argument is, different way forming one and defining an arguments soundness. In this unit, called 1857, we learned about the Dread Scott cases while discussing logical fallacies. Logical fallacies are contradictory or false premises that make an argument unsound. For this action project we looked through our schools code of conduct and find a policy that we believed should be amended. I chose to amend the part called "Appeal To Process".

Policy

Any student or family has the right to appeal any decision made by the Disciplinary Council or Head of School. Appeals need to be in writing and received in a timely manner. The Disciplinary Council will consider all appeals and the Head of School will communicate final decision.

Current Syllogism

  1. The Disciplinary Council and head of school aren’t always made aware of all circumstances and factors when.
  2. GCE, as stated in the beginning of the code of conduct, believes that each student should be considered on an individual basis
  3. All students are aware and able enough to advocate for themselves in a concise and timely manner.
  4. The full extend of a students appeal can be conveyed in a single writing, with no further explanations or clarifications required

Reasons For Revisions

In the first section of the code of conduct it is stated that: “Our goal is to hold all students accountable for their actions, however, each student will be considered on an individual basis.” Every student should be given the chance to explain their perspective. Without an open dialogue between the school board and or head of school the student's perspective and voice are not represented. A meeting gives a greater guarantee that the student will understand why their actions are resulting in the consequences and teaching them self-advocacy.

Revised Policy

Any student or family has the right to appeal any decision made by the Disciplinary Council or Head of School. An initial address to the appropriate powers need to be received in a timely manner. The meeting should be made up of some combination of the counselor, the head of school, the parent(s) and student depending on the severity of the transgression. The Disciplinary Council will consider all appeals and the Head of School will communicate final decision.

Revised Syllogism

  1. As is stated in the very begin of the code of conduct every student should be treated as an individual.
  2. Not all students are able to best articulate all factors and circumstances in writing.
  3. The school board and head of school are not omnipotent beings and require information to be provided to them in order to reach a fair and complete conclusion.
  4. Having a conversation with all parties will clarify any miscommunications and give insight into the students perspective.

Co-Signer Quote: "Students and their families should get a chance to speak face-to-face to the head of school because just writing doesn't communicate all of the feelings and emotion behind an appeal. Writing can sometimes cause confusion behind the intent, and giving the option to appeal in person allows for any type of student to give it their best."
